Lesotho - September 2004

SW & Gert Burger's trip to Lesotho

When I was told to perform some tests at ESKOM Drakensberg Power Station, I immediately saw the bigger picture - a visit to Lesotho on my way back home. I asked my brother Gert if he would like to go with me, so we left Nelspruit on Wednesday, 1 September and spent the night at Royal Natal National Park. It has nice campsites with clean ablution facilities. The next day I spent most of the morning at ESKOM Drakensberg hydro-electric power station while Gert broke camp. From there we drove over the Oliviershoek Pass to Harrismith where we just missed a ferocious hail storm. The town and immediate area was covered in white hail stones, almost like covered in snow. That night we spent at Glen Rheenen campsite in Golden gate. Ertjies Luyt, an old biking friend of mine since 25 years ago and even longer friend of Gert since their school days during the 60's at Sentraal, Bloemfontein, came all the way from Bloem to spend the night with us.

Glen Rheenen is not to be recommended as a campsite due to it's proximity to the highway passing through the nature reserve. At night the passing lorries made it impossible to sleep. The road should be deproclaimed as a public road. Then there was that horse with a brass bell hung to it's neck browsing around in the camp site all night. It was a long night indeed.
